When Fat = Fine

Just one more way media can be misleading… what exactly does this title mean?

Well, for Puerto Rico it means coughing up some serious dinero for being overweight.

[?!]

Put down the ice cream and listen up…

Puerto Rico , i.e. “Rich Port”…dare I say they are rich in their portliness.

So much so as a matter of fact that Lawmakers in Puerto Rico are trying to pass legislation that will levy fines against parents whose children are identified as being obese. Once identified, the parents would have approximately six months to show improvement in their “slim-down” child[ren].

childhood-obesity-billboards

We all have heard the stats – childhood obesity is up 300% in the last 50 years. Astounding. Truly.

But is Puerto Rico going about it the right way?

Three bold-faced problems that stand out right away with this are :

1. There is not a clear indication of what matrices are being used to determine obesity. For example, the ‘notorious BMI’ calculation is not always accurate especially for children because it does not account for muscle mass or growth spurts.

2. The legislation is asking that Teachers take a large role in educating the children, but then the fines are given to parents [?]

3. There is some strong indication that poor nutrition in Puerto Rico is driven by poverty [i.e. cheap food is a staple for families; these foods are often void of necessary nutrients, so over-eating is common as the body stays hungry hoping for the nutrients it needs] – so issuing huge fines to already financially strapped families may further plague the country

What other problems do you see?

What other solutions possibly exist?

Why do you think Puerto Rico is standing up with bold [if not flawed] legislation and not America?

These are tough questions, Misfits, but they need answers.

If we don’t answer them, someone else will. And we might all find that we’ve bitten off more than we can chew.

In every sense of the word…

Happy Tuesdays Misfits!

It’s a Tuesday, and even thought it’s no longer the Week of Wellness [W.O.W.], this Video is going to be Trending before next month and I want to make sure you all see it first.

Thank god that not everyone is sitting at home watching reality TV; some people are still brainstorming how to improve our world.

Coffee, as we have heard [and MissFit has validated], does wonders for maintaining the integrity of your Cardiovascular system and your brain cells when consumed daily  in 10-30 oz installments. The actual coffee is the only part that has the benefit… the double-whip-mocha-froppah-choco-latte is not doing your body any real favors.

That being said, what if there was an element found in the coffee harvesting process that has protein, fiber, and additional minerals and antioxidants, that we could harness the production of AND is currently being chucked to the garbage as worthless…?

No other commentary needed, this Video is remarkable and speaks for itself.

Three cheers for reducing, re-using, and re-shaping how we think about our world.

W.O.W. – SUNNY SUNDAY 03/15/15

“Sunny” – What would a Health Blog be without some uplifting, inspirational anecdotes and mantras?

__________________________________________________________________

The killer whale’s heart weighs one hundred kilos but in other respects it is light”.

This quote is from an ancient Eastern poet.

Its point has remained extremely poignant over the years and we find similar sentiments in our culture hundreds of years later.

Have you ever talked to a friend who has a dog? Ever heard anyone say something akin to:

“god, that’s the life, right? Eating, barking, wandering around and occasionally dozing off all day…Not a care in the world…MUST BE NICE”

Oddly, we are told on one hand that as Homo Sapien Sapiens, we are the apex of creation because we have the ability to think critically and reason…however, this often burdens us with elements that our pets [and, similarly, the killer whale] seem not to have…elements such as guilt, shame, imperfection, and inadequacy.

As humans, there is a time and place for these elements, but they should be on your terms. And they should have the purpose of helping you to be a better person.

Not a worry wart wracked with anxiety and depression.

Make amends if they need to be made.

Then

LET GO.

Have a Sunny Sunday!

W.O.W. – SEASONAL SATURDAY 03/14/15

“Seasonal” – Take a look at how to stay active and make delicious food choices no matter what the temperature is outside

It is always best for your taste buds and your wallet to purchase produce that is in season.

March is a bit of a precarious month for produce.

This is because Weather patterns are often unpredictable: sometimes quick melting know causes flooding and ruins crops for miles; other times late frosts destroy leaves and buds.

Here is a list of traditionally in-season vegetables and fruits for the month of March:

Late Winter/Early Spring Veggies:

  • Beets
  • Dandelion
  • Fava beans
  • Peas
  • Fingerling Potatoes
  • Radishes
  • Spinach
  • Turnips
  • Fennel
  • White asparagus
  • Watercress
  • Wild mushrooms

Late Winter/Early Spring Fruit

  • Blood oranges
  • Citrus minneolas/tangelos
  • Papaya
  • Lemons
  • Rhubarb

Not sure where you can go to get the freshest, local fare your city has to offer?

Quite guessing!

Check out this amazing website http://www.usdalocalfooddirectories.com/

Simply punch in your zip code and away you go! Don’t forget your re-usable bags.

MissFit Tip: Once you find a market you want to try, check the listing on Yelp and see if there are any reviews. That way you can narrow your focus to the “critically-acclaimed” ones and shy away from duds.

Happy Seasonal Saturday!

W.O.W. – FUN FACT FRIDAY 03/13/15

Did you know that there are THREE occasions this year where the 13th of the month falls on a Friday?

February, March, and November!

How exciting!

Unless of course you have a phobia of such things…

According to Time and Date online records:

The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia – “Frigg” is the Norse goddess whom Friday is named after and “triskaidekaphobia” means the fear of “13”. It’s also known as paraskevidekatriaphobia, partly from the Greek word Friday. It is a real fear – some people who have this disorder are even too afraid to say the words “Friday the 13th”. Others avoid flying on a plane, going to work, or even getting out of bed. According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, millions of Americans are afraid of Friday the 13th. Symptoms of this fear range from mild anxiety and a nagging sense of doom to full-blown panic attacks.

Take a deep breathe, and go meditate in Shin Stack position, you’ll soon forget all about it…

Have a Fantastic Fun Fact Friday!

W.O.W. – THERAPEUTIC THURSDAY 03/12/15

“Therapeutic” – Gain insight into your Actions [sometimes called ‘behaviors’] and how they may be functioning as a direct result of Thoughts and Feelings

There’s a quote that says, “No one has to lose in order for you to win”.

Hmmmmm – are we sure about that?

Isn’t that sort of the whole purpose of the terminology? How can there be a winner without a loser, and vice-a-versa?

Interestingly, people often refer to our existence on Earth as a game – the Game of Life to be exact.

Why do you suppose that is?

I challenge you to consider that it’s because we have secretly [or not so secretly] decided as a culture that there ARE in fact Winners and Losers in the Game of Life.

And, let’s be honest, NO ONE wants to lose.

So what recourse do we have other than to smuggle as many resources as we can and trample over others on our way to the top? After all, there’s not room for all of us up there, right?

Just remember, being at the top and not having anyone to share it with makes you the Loser.

This Therapeutic Thursday, I challenge you to reflect on how you interact with colleagues, siblings, and anyone else with who, you may feel an inherent rivalry or competition. Decide which elements of that competitive nature help you to be a kinder, stronger, more productive member of your group. If you can’t find any…reconsider your position.

Stay Well,

MissFit

W.O.W. – WORK IT OUT WEDNESDAY 03/11/15

“Work it Out” – Get over that mid-week hump with the added gusto of a new work out move. Some moves may be borrowed from the Kama Sutra. Possibly.

____________________________________________________________________________

It is very easy to injure ligaments and bands that hold muscles in place if they aren’t properly warmed up and, subsequently, kept warm for a period after the workout.

This can be a challenge during the winter months when long periods of time may be spent outdoors or large jumps in temperature from the steamy gym to the tundra outside.

In light of this, MissFit is featuring the Shin Stack for the Work it Out move of the month this Wednesday.

c/o pinterest.com

c/o pinterest.com

[The pose is also known as the “Double Pigeon to Yogis].

It is the #1 way to stretch iliobands and open up hip flexors in a safe, effective manner – – which is essential for anyone looking to improve on flexibility, posture, endurance, and hip-gyrating dance moves.

To the greatest extent you are able, mimic the picture above.

Hold for a minimum of 10 seconds and then switch leg positions so that the opposite leg is underneath.

As you get more comfortable in the position, focus on leaning your torso forward for a deep stretch and work your way up to holding for a full 60 seconds. For an added challenge, point your toes.

**Important** remember to inhale/exhale breathe during this exercise and keep your neck at a 90 degree angle with your body or simply let it to hang comfortably with chin towards chest. This will help prevent unnecessary neck strain during this exercise.

Enjoy your Wednesday Work out!

Stay Well,

MissFit

PLASTICS MAKE IT [CANCER?] POSSIBLE

The story of Norm and Ned

NORM: You can’t drink tap water – are you crazy?? All those chemicals… Here, drink this bottled water.

NED: Wait, how old is this?

NORM: Not very. I bought it last week. I thought I was seeing you over the weekend…but …ok, you caught me… I refilled it with filtered water from home and it was in my car for a day or two. Drink up!

NED: Norm, isn’t it 100 degrees outside? The inside of your car probably got to over 200 degrees Fahrenheit this week… don’t the chemicals leech from the plastic in to the water? And aren’t you NOT supposed to re-use those bottles? Doesn’t it, like, SAY that on the label?

………………………..

One day later

…………………………

NORM: Here you go, Ned – it’s one of those fancy BPA-free bottles. Filled, once again, with fresh, filtered water AND kept in the fridge. Now, will you drink it?

NED: What’s BPA? And why is it free?

NORM: Ned! Do you live in a hole? BPA – also known as – bisphenol A, is a hormone imitator said to be a carcinogen.

NED: A “car- what” ?

NORM: Gah! Ned! For heaven’s sake… A carcinogen is something that scientists say causes cancer. In this case, Dr. Patisaul from the Dept. of Biology at North Carolina State says that BPA appears to interfere with the hormone Estrogen. Estrogen is really important in organizing brain cells and regulating other organ functions. This interference causes cellular mutations that lead to cancers.

NED: Oh! Yes! BPA-free! I thought for sure I had misheard you… *takes newspaper from pocket* I have an article here from the equally prestigious periodical Environmental Health Perspectives that specifically states a study they conducted found that products labeled “BPA-free” released MORE chemicals than BPA-containing products during microwave conduction…

NORM & NED: So what’s the truth, MISSFIT?

MISSFIT: The truth is that the jury is still out on Plastics overall – BUT there does appear to be STRONG correlation between the heating of plastic [in microwaves or simply sitting in cars all day] and the release of a VARIETY of chemicals. While too few longitudinal studies have been completed to call them all cancer-causing, none of these chemicals appear to be super healthy and should be avoided whenever possible.

As often as you can, opt for stainless steel, glass, and ceramic options to house hot and cold food/beverage items alike. This helps the environment as well because plastic sits in landfills for hundreds of years before it even starts to disintegrate.

As far as reheating goes, opt for stove top, slow cooker, and oven-based methods as much as possible.

That’s what’s Trending this Tuesday!

W.O.W. – MAKE IT HAPPEN MONDAY 03/09/15

“Make it Happen” – Start off the business week with positive reinforcements, tips and tricks for helping yourself be successful in work, wellness, and wealth.

Working out with someone of a slightly higher fitness level can motivate you to perform longer and harder.

Similarly, for those who have trouble coordinating – even just asking a friend or loved one to be an accountability partner and check in daily by text or email has been shown to increase persistence [and success!] with eating healthy and staying active by up to 55%.

#noexcuses

On the other hand, the biggest time period of weight gain for most adults [post-college] is shown to be (1) starting a new job (2) casual dating.

care of boss-behavior.com

care of boss-behavior.com

The reason is because both scenarios put you in situations where you are more likely to eat out in restaurants and consume alcohol to connect with people and socially “normalize”.

Be aware of this and strive to surround yourself with people who are supportive or at least understand your healthy lifestyle so you don’t succumb to unnecessary weight added by peer pressure to those daily lunches/dates you couldn’t afford anyways.

NOW…Make it Happen this Monday!

Week of Wellness Newsletter – Introduction Edition

Misfits!

Can you believe it’s March, already?

Weren’t we just wearing goofy glasses, sipping champagne, and freezing out in Times Square?

While some of us just celebrated Chinese New Year and are getting settled into the Year of the Sheep/Goat, for most of us, the end of this month will bring with it the end of the first quarter of yet another year that is going by far faster than anyone can comprehend…

Except those precarious hours of 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Those, weirdly, still last forever.

I want to send a special note out to all of my clients – you all have been kicking butt and making incredible strides towards your goals for this year. I could not be more proud to be in your lives and honored to cheer on your progress.

With that being said, I have always told you that I really do listen when you talk. In the interest of transparency and diligence – I want to share with you, Readers, that I have received some feedback from my constituents that sometimes my Postings [while full of information and laughs] are a bit too lengthy for everyone’s busy lives and I have received several requests over the last few months for a shorter, more focused, and regular newsletter style of information sharing.

NO brainer!

Of course I can!

After all, my job [literally] is to mold and shape this business into an entity that is success-driven and client-centered.
And so with that, I am piloting the Week of Wellness [WOW] newsletter.

WOW will operate on a Monday through Sunday schedule. Since it is only Saturday [or Sunday depending on your time zone], I wanted to take the opportunity to share the format with you so that you could know what to expect and what to get excited for!

WOW will be posted the second week of each month. Statistically, the second week of the month has the least number of deadlines due in ANY industry nationwide.

Without further Ado, here is the format:
