“Seasonal” – Take a look at how to stay active and make healthy choices no matter what the temperature is outside

It’s September, which means we aren’t quite in High Pollen Season – nor are we quite in Flu Season.

So what’s with all the congestion, sniffles, and headaches?

It’s STRESS

I realize this is hard to believe.

None of us really have anything major going on.

It’s NOT LIKE it’s the first full month of school for parents and children, and college students …

The first full month of football as we discussed in last Tuesday’s article,

Or the last month before the FIVE MONTH stretch of debt-inducing, hangover-prone holidays:

October – Halloween

November – Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving

December – Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa [respectively]

January – New  Years

February –  Valentine’s Day

Dont even act like Halloween and Valentine’s Day don’t count… you know as well as I do.

Listen, here’s the deal, I know we have heard about stress for eons and it’s something everyone has and no one wants and we all should sleep more and eat better and exercise regularly…

blah blah

But here’s the SIMPLE truth:

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more cortisol [hormone] to help you stay alert …while also reducing white blood cell count [lowering your immunity]….and storing belly fat…

Cortisol also messes with Leptin [another hormone] which increases cravings for unhealthy foods in unhealthy amounts …

When your Cortisol and Leptin levels are too high, it messes with your circadian rhythm so that even when try to sleep you CANT sleep as soundly…which means your body will not get the rest it needs and it will further increase the levels of those two hormones.

If this goes one for several consecutive days, your body will continue to reduce white blood cell count and your fatigue will get worse and you will start to feel that “flu-like” feeling.

Your body is literally trying to get you to slow down, it’s begging you to get into bed and sleep so that it can get back on track.

The take-home message here is that : Your body is in charge 🙂

If you don’t give your body what it needs, it will make changes on a cellular level to get what it needs.

Work with your body, not against it.

It’s the only one you have.

W.O.W. FUN FACT FRIDAY 09/18/15

“Fun Fact” – Self-explanatory…

For all of my September babies out there  – September is the Month of the Sapphire. That beautiful, deep, rich blue is unparalleled.

You’ve probably never heard a health professional tell you to ‘Get Blue’ for weight loss – but I’m going to.

I’m not telling you to get sad and depressed – but I am telling you to consider getting the color Blue around you, especially in the kitchen, plates, bowls, counter tops, etc.

Why, you ask?          

Simple:
Research shows that  BLUE is the most calming color, it has been used in Color Therapy [yes that’s a real thing] to treat insomnia and over-activity in both adults and children.

Blue is also the least appetizing color as it does not occur naturally in foods aside from blueberries and some plums and eggplants.
Furthermore, evolutionarily, humans avoid foods that are thought to be poisonous and BLUE tends to be a color associated with poison and/or spoiled and rotting food. …

Therefore, eating off of BLUE dishes can reduce food intake by 15% or more simply by inducing notions of calmness, mindfulness, and survival.

And – BONUS TRACK – another blue color [and beautiful gemstone], turquoise is also used in Color Therapy to stimulate white blood cell count and boost immunity, keeping you healthier, longer.

W.O.W. – THERAPEUTIC THURSDAY 07/09/15

Oh Freud. We’ve loved you, we’ve laughed at you, we’ve heralded you once more, all short-lived and swaying in time with popular believes.

It’s not you, Freud, honest…It probably has something to do with our own internal turmoil . Our personal love/hate relationship with ourselves…

How Freudian of us.

Speaking of children and parents and parents trying to raise children while still mourning their own childhood, perhaps it is high time we sit back and ask ourselves – “What is the goal, here?”

As parents we are always trying to instill in our children the realization of our own vision of success and happiness.

As children, we are trying desperately to please our parents and also our friends. All the while trying to figure out who we are amongst a back splash of Media mongers.

*Phew*

It’s no wonder we have higher rates of anxiety and depression than ever before.

Perhaps, instead of lamenting everything we have done or not done or tried to do as parents, as children, or in that hybrid balancing act of being both child to our parents and adult to our children, we should just call a spade a spade. And that is exactly what Jennifer Senior does in her now famous TED talk exposing the high bar of Happiness:

On this Therapeutic Thursday, give yourself the gift of the next 19 minutes and listen.

W.O.W. – MAKE IT HAPPEN MONDAY 04/06/15

“Make it Happen” – Start off the business week with positive reinforcements, tips and tricks for helping yourself be successful in work, wellness, and wealth.

It’s April.

Uncle Sam’s favorite time of year…

IF you have not completed your taxes yet, Make it Happen.

There is only one more Monday left before you will need to file an extension or possibly risk the dreaded audit.

Let’s be real – neither you nor I can find anything specifically written about why it is a law to pay federal taxes. But we do. OR we understand bad things may happen if we choose not to.

In fact – Spoiler alert – Fun Fact Friday is going to shed some light on just WHY it is we pay income taxes and a few of the key players in how that all came to be.

But for now, Misfits, let’s talk Action.

If you have not done your taxes, take a few moments today and make a short list of what you need before you can officially say “I’ve done my taxes”.

Do you need to collect old receipts?

Jump on to TurboTax?

Hire someone?

Depending on the complexity of your home and work life, you may be able to just go online and use the forms offered by one of the software companies [such as TurboTax]. For others, paying a few hundred bucks and having a trained professional handle it is the best way to go.

Keep this as STRESS-FREE for yourself as humanly possible. It’s not worth getting flustered over – no matter what your state of affairs.

The bottom line is that whether you owe or you don’t owe – you are getting  $$ money $$

Here’s the deal:

If you get a Refund – this means that the Feds were holding on to YOUR money for an entire year and they are finally giving it back.

If you Owe – this means that YOU held on to an excess of what the Feds believed you should have. You had “their money” in YOUR Savings Account, collecting Interest…And now they want to have back the principal amount – BUT you made interest on THEIR money.

Most importantly:

Don’t sweat it, the whole thing is sort of nonsense anyways; Stay calm. Make a simple list of what you need to do to submit everything, and sit down and do it.
